Free Trade, Protection, and God's Law

Protectionism is in clear opposition to the liberty prescribed in God’s law regarding international trade. God allowed His people to trade freely with other nations (Deut 2:2-7), even if they were enemies. Civil rulers were never given the right to interfere with the free enterprise of individuals and their trade agreements. Their role is limited to punishing wrongdoers (Rom 13:4). When people are left to trade freely according to God’s will and design, things go generally well for both parties of a trade. Through free trade, we have seen prosperity reach the most impoverished countries, the spread of Christian culture and ideas, and a restrain on war. Free trade is a blessing and gift from God.

Whiffing on Nero and Romans 13

“Romans 13 talks about the continuing role of proper civil government echoing Genesis 9:6 and the sword of government to punish the shedding of innocent blood, but it should not be understood to be granting unlimited power unto it. An interpretation along these lines is neither demanded by consistent interpretation nor is it in alignment with a comprehensive understanding of civil government taking into account the whole of scripture.”

53 April Thoughts on COVID-19

I just went back and read what I wrote four months ago concerning COVID-19. When I decided to go back and read my 53 thoughts, I expected to be proven wrong on a few points. After all, so much has changed. We have gone through various popular conspiracy theories, the official story has shifted more than once, and there seems to be a new COVID related controversy every week. Instead…

Brothers, we are not partisan cheerleaders.

There is a huge ethical and theological difference between holding our nose and reluctantly voting for an adulterous New York Democrat turned Republican and gleefully championing the cause of the impeached Republican president. I understand and I truly sympathize if some Christians are trying to be practical (though I don’t buy that it is actually practical), but we should be on guard against buying into the statist system so much that we turn into undiscerning fans of amoral politicians. Are we unwilling to call evil evil because some other candidates might be a moderately darker shade of evil?

Bahnsen on “Social Justice”

Many people have pushed back or openly ridiculed my view that biblical Christians ought to take back the phrase “social justice.” It has even occasioned some extravagant claims. In addition to other epithets, it is now sometimes heard that I have become leftist, or some other similar claim. Let me show you how misguided that really is, and indeed what a powerful ally is on my side in this practice.

Humble Theonomy

We confess a faith that demands humility. There are many different forms of false humility masquerading as a virtue within the church, yet, that does not diminish the command to be humble. In a culture, even a Christian culture that practices an array of false humilities, understanding, and practicing true humility is even more vital.

Biblical Dominion or Seven Mountains Dominion?

The most concerning point of divergence is that the 7MD version does what critics of traditional dominion theology have falsely accused us of doing the whole time: planning to grab the reins of influence through whatever means necessary, usurp the seats of political power, and impose a so-called “theocracy” upon society from the top down with a “whether you like it or not, it’s for your own good” mentality.

Theonomic Christians in an Age of Immigration Control Socialists

Simply put, the idea that Democrats are for open borders while Republicans are for closed borders is a myth borne out of ignorance and tribalistic non-thinking. Democrats are opposed to Trump, not immigration regulations. Democrats are in favor of strict, highly regulated, massively expensive immigration policies just like Republicans. The Democrats do this while attempting to sound less xenophobic, but their policies are very similar. This is politics, not ethics, and we would do well to not be so naive.
